Balancing Act was created in the aftermath of the 2016 U.S. elections, reclaiming the phrase “Nasty Woman” used by presidential candidate Donald J. Trump against his opponent, Hillary Clinton, during a debate. That insult ignited a feminist movement, culminating in mass demonstrations like the Women’s March. In this work, a woman wearing a real crochet pink hat—a symbol of protest and solidarity—juggles two children in her arms. The title speaks to the constant negotiation between care and resistance, embodying the defiance, resilience, and unapologetic power of what it means to be a “nasty woman.”
