Santa Cecilia Tocando el Rondador
Etching on copper, engraving, watercolor & thread drawings.
11″ x 15″
When I was invited to make a work for the exhibit Renderings of Santa Cecilia, patrona de la música, I thought about how I could relate her to my culture and my roots. I thought of various instruments that are unique to the area where I grew up and settled for the Rondador, which is Ecuador’s national instrument. It is a single-ranked panpipe with eight to thirty pipes, all of which are closed at one end. Pipes are occasionally made of condor feathers, Ecuador’s national bird, just like this one that Santa Cecilia is holding in this image.
