La Virgen de Quito apareciĆ³ en Austin
This print is a representation of the Virgen de Quito (Virgin of Quito) from Ecuador. The original sculpture of the virgin was made by an 18th century sculptor Bernardo de Legarda. This Madonna represents a turning point of the Quito School of Art (one of the most renowned of the Americas) because it shows a virgin in movement that is practically dancing in contrast with the traditional static Madonnas that were produced during that time. It is also the only virgin that has the wings of an angel attached to her back. Currently, la Virgen de Quito decorates the main altar at the Church of St. Francis in downtown Quito. This virgin is also known as the Immaculate Apocalyptic because Legarda was directly inspired by the biblical apocalyptic winged woman.
